Why it's vintage

Jerzees was Russell Corporation's sweatshirt and fleece brand, launched in the 1980s. Russell made most of its apparel in the United States until a restructuring that began in 1998 moved sewing offshore; by 2005 about 99% of it was done outside the US. Here's how collectors date this one.

KEY INDICATORS: what to look for

1. Neck tag (photo 4): White rectangular tag with a grid background, the red diagonal JERZEES logo and MADE IN U.S.A. Collectors date this tag style to the late 1980s through the mid-1990s. Modern Jerzees are made overseas.
2. Raglan sleeves (photos 1-2): The sleeve seam runs diagonally from the underarm up to the collar instead of dropping from a shoulder seam, a classic older sweatshirt cut.
3. Rib trim (photos 1-2): Rib-knit collar, cuffs and waistband.
